Osun: Court Remands Suspected Cultist For Illegal Possession Of Gun

A 32-year-old man, Atoyebi Olamide, has been remanded in Ilesa correctional center over alleged unlawful possession of firearms and being a member of confraternity.

Olamide was arraigned before an Osun State Magistrate Court, sitting in Osogbo on Wednesday on five-count charge bordering on conspiracy,felony, unlawful possession, and breach of peace.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Fatoba Temitope accused the defendant of conspiring with others at large on the 27th July, 2022 at Agunbelewo Area, Osogbo to commit felony.

He said the defendant is a member of Unlawful society known as “Aiye” Confraternity while they appeared in a manner likely to cause breach of peace in the aforementioned area.

Temitope added that one locally made cut to size barrel and two live cartridges was found in possession of the defendant’s which he could not give satisfactory account.

According to police prosecutor, the offences contravene Section 4 and punishable under Section 27(1) b (1) of the Firearms Act Cap 1.28 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2004. W. and Sections 516, 64 and 249 (d)of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

The defendant however, pleaded not guilty.

Defence Counsel, Tunbosun Oladipupo prayed the court to admit him to bail in the most liberal terms.

The presiding magistrate, Adeyomoye Adeyeba ordered the defendant to be remanded in Ilesa correctional centre while his defence counsel present his formal bail application.

The case was adjourned to August 2, 2022 for mention.
