By Ayobami Agboola Osogbo
Residents of Ayedire, Olaoluwa Local governments and part of Iwo local government area on Monday thronged the street of Osogbo, Osun state capital to protest the alleged assault on one the Royal fathers in the Osun West Senatorial District, Oba Dhirulahi Akinropo by Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi.
All the Chiefs and some residents in the ancient town of Ogbaagba and Ile-Ogbo and Iwo staged a peaceful protest to register their grievances, they described Oluwo’s action as barbaric and total disrespectful to the tradition and culture of Yoruba race.
CityMirrorNews has reported that the Oluwo, who was invited to the Zone 11 police headquarters in Osogbo by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the zone, Bashir Makama’ beat up a fellow monarch.
Oba Akanbi allegedly stood up from where he was sitting and descended on Oba Dhikrulahi Akinropo, Agbowu of Ogbaagba town, inflicting injury on him.
The members of the towns had mobilised themselves and stormed the officef Osun State Governor at Government Secretariat , Abeere to demonstrate against the alleged assault.
They accused Governor of keeping mum since the incident happened last week Friday and urged him to react by reprimanding Oluwo with suspension.
The protesters’ spokesperson, a former member of the State House of Assembly, Hon Sikiru Ogunlade Araoye explained that Governor Oyetola’s indifference on the issue could cause communal clash between Iwo and other adjourning town, Ogbaagba, whose traditional ruler was assaulted.
Araoye said “we are here to protest peacefully before the Governor to remind him that his silence is not golden. The Governor cannot continue to keep mum on this issue. If a traditional ruler like Oluwo has suddenly turned himself to boxer and beating his fellow monarch, he deserves to be punished. So, we, the people of Iwo, Ayedire and Olaoluwa demand the suspension of Oluwo.
Also speaking, one of the protesters, the Mosigbaola of Ile-Ogbo kingdom, Chief Popoola Olawore condemned Oluwo’s action and called for his dethronement.
Olawore claimed Oluwo had been in the habit of attacking fellow Obas. He asked the Governor to call him to order to save the traditional institution from mess.
Some of the placards displayed read ” Oluwo Must be Brought to Book; Oluwo is a Disgrace to Traditional Institution; We Are No longer Safe Under Oluwo’s reign; “We demand Oluwo’s suspension now,” among others.
Security personnel manning the State government Secretariat had barred the protesters from gaining access to the Governor’s office.
But few minutes after the demonstrators stood their ground and insisted that they would make their grievances known to the Governor, they were allowed into the Governor’s office.
At the frontage of the Governor’s office, the protesters were attended to by the Commissioners for Information, Health and Special Adviser to Governor Oyetola on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters in Osun.
The spokesman for the protesters, the Asiwaju of Ile-Ogbo, Chief Raphael Akanbi Nafiu presented a copy of petition to the state government seeking for sanctions against Oluwo.
