Boost Food Production With Modern Technology, Commissioner Tells Farmers
Mrs Mary Enwongulu, the Nasarawa Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, has urged farmers in the country to embrace modern technology to increase crop production.
The commissioner gave the advice on Friday, while distributing fertilisers to farmers in Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of the state.
Enwongulu, who is the Chairperson, Fertiliser Distribution Committee of Nassarawa Eggon, said that using modern technology would ensure food security in the country.
She said that embracing modern technology would improve the revenue base of farmers and the government, as well as enhance the country’s socio-economic development through increase in food production.
“I want to appeal to farmers, particularly the small land holders, not to resist adopting new farming methods and technology.
“The strategies will maximize their production potential and make the country to be self reliant in food production,” she said.
Enwongulu urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the fertilisers to boost agricultural production and socio-economic development of the state and the country at large.
“Gov. Al-Makura is doing his best to boost agricultural production in the state through good policies in order to fight hunger, poverty and to ensure food security in the state,” she said.
Enwongulu warned that the government would not spare anyone trying to sabotage its efforts by selling fertiliser above the approved price of N4, 000 per bag.
The commissioner explained that the state government subsidised the product in order to reduce the hardship being faced by farmers in the state.
She urged the people of the state to embrace farming, considering the importance of agricultural production to the socio-economic development of the country.
Also speaking, Mr Akolo Success, the Interim Management Committee Chairman of Nassarawa Eggon LG, lauded the Al-Makura-led administration for the initiative.
Success expressed the hope that the distribution of the commodity would ensure bumper harvest in the 2017 cropping season.
Some of the farmers who spoke to NAN at the event lauded the state government for the distribution and called for its sustenance. (NAN)
