Tunisian President, Beji Caid Essebsi has died on Thursday at the age of 92 according to his office.
The North African country’s first democratically elected leader was elected in 2014 to succeed longtime dictator, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali after three years of the Arab Spring.
The late President had been hospitalised with a severe illness in late June and was returned to intensive care on Thursday.
Essebsi, a veteran politician, was the oldest head of state in Africa and second oldest in the world after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.
